Starting next Wednesday (Aug. 30) there will be temporary changes to accessing the Nicola Valley Hospital as the planned expansion of the building’s emergency room gets underway.

The expansion has been in the works for a couple years now and the Interior Health Authority (IHA) is ready to break ground on the $6.5 million project, which is expected to be completed in the fall of 2018.

While construction is ongoing, the parking area east of the existing emergency department will be closed to the public, with no through access permitted to the north side parking lot, stated a press release from the IHA.

The east parking lot will be reserved for patients visiting the emergency department, x-ray or laboratory, as well as on-call and physician parking. Parking for all other services will be available off the Grimmett Street entrance, stated the release Staff parking will be located to the rear of the hospital.

During construction there will also be a temporary entrance to the emergency department created next to the existing one on the north side of there building in order to create uninterrupted access to the building during construction. IHA intends to accompany the entrance with signage and lighting to safely direct patients and staff around the construction site.

The main entrance will not be changed and can be accessed from Grimmett Street.

The project will expand the hospital’s ER from 100 square metres to approximately 500 square metres, and include features such as a covered ambulance bay, a separate ambulance entrance, confidential triage and registration spaces and a new nurse station.
