The five chiefs of Nicola Valley First Nations have taken their protest against biosolids to Premier Christy Clark’s constituency office in West Kelowna.

The chiefs and their supporters, including people involved with the anti-biosolids group Friends of the Nicola Valley, are occupying Clark’s office to bring their request for an immediate moratorium on all importation of sewage sludge to the Nicola Valley right to the top.

The occupation began yesterday (Wednesday, April 15) at about 2 p.m. and continues today. About 25 people are on site.

The chiefs say the fact the sewage sludge is being brought to the area with no consultation goes against First Nations’ rights and title.

“Trucking thousands of tons of sewage treatment waste to be spread onto our farms, ranches and forests is not healthy for our lands,” Lower Nicola Band Chief Aaron Sam said in a press release.

“We stand together to safeguard the environment for future generations.”
