While there’s no timeline for a project to be completed, the Ministry of Transportation intends to change up the line spacing on the Voght Street overpass in lieu of constructing a sidewalk, said the City of Merritt’s chief administrative officer (CAO) Shawn Boven.

“They’re going to alter the line painting to make it wider for pedestrians,” said Boven. “The room’s there. There’s no need to construct a sidewalk over the edge of the overpass.”

Boven said the province intends to shift the centre line, creating a wider pedestrian walkway that will tie in to the sidewalk at the end of DeWolf Way.

The walkway across the overpass would only be located on the north end of Voght Street, Boven said.

“It’s not practical to have it on both sides,” said Boven. “Pedestrians from town would ideally follow that trail down to the end of DeWolf Way, walk down the north side of the overpass and then there would be a pedestrian crossing across the highway to the triangular island that’s on the east side of the overpass,” Boven told the Herald.
