Literacy Week another Logan Lake success story

Because of the team of volunteers who lent helping hands, skills, dedication and enthusiasm to make Literacy Week special on so many levels, it was declared as another community success story.

There was active involvement of elementary school students in planned events while Provincial exam week at the high school prevented the participation of many of the older students.

Among the success stories were the Games At Lunch initiatives — Monday at Logan Lake Elementary School and Wednesday at Logan Lake Secondary School with the positive feedback confirming these events were a great idea and many of the students hoped it would be repeated next year. Special thanks to Nicole Montgomery and Luanne Baker of PAC for their participation.

Nicole’s Special Family P.J. Story Time at the library was another huge hit with 14 kids and family members in attendance.  Apparently not only did the children show up in pajamas, but a mom, who shall remain nameless, appeared in her pajamas while carrying her stuffy for company.

Wednesday featured a Parent Meet and Greet at LLES which was open to all parents with school-aged or younger children with PAC members Cara, Nicole and Jenni serving coffee, tea and the treats that they had prepared. The event offered the 11 adults and three children an opportunity to mix and mingle and perhaps establish new friendships – something which is not easy if you’re an at home parent who isn’t able to easily get out and about.

The same day at noon at the high school, Chef Cara Holmstrup, made a guest appearance at a noon drop-in event assisting students to make homemade Pizza Pops.  Another success story and, if your mouth is watering, check out the Info for Logan Lakers page where you’ll also find the recipe for the pops as well as a wealth of recipes, as part of Literacy Week, shared by bakers in the community.

Thursday was another activity-filled day which saw the TNRD’s computer guru, Larry Maki, at the library offering a wealth of info on computers and eBooks. The Parents and Tots program which happens Thursday mornings from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at the Church on the Hill is another opportunity for those with preschool kids to get together for coffee and conversation while their youngsters enjoy play time.  Later on, Grade 6 youth were welcomed by members of the Logan Lake Seniors Centre who offered them the opportunity to participate in Carpet Bowling.

Reports came back from the kids that the seniors were both patient and kind, everyone had a good time and they hope they can make a return visit for more fun.

As the school week drew to an end, there were still many, many activities to keep kids of all ages involved in Literacy Week.  The always popular Jodene Gowans was a special guest at the elementary school on Friday telling stories and sharing the progressive story that each class had created.  And, then it was off to the library for pre-schoolers and kindergarten kids to participate in the Marty and the Battle of the Alphabet puppet show presented by Nicole Montgomery and Vesta Giles.

Lately, weather has had an interesting effect on life in Logan Lake.  Not only did it negatively impact the recently concluded Polar Carnival but it also prevented the scheduled appearance of Kamloops’ genealogy expert, Al Yelland, as the first guest in the library’s 2012 Speaker Series. But, Vesta Giles, librarian extraordinaire, and her super staff have found a spot for Al on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 1 – 3 p.m. So, stay tuned because I’ll have more info on Mr. Yelland in the near future.
