Near Nicola Lake in Monck Park are some pieces of First Nations history.

Pictographs and depressions in the ground left by pit houses can still be seen scattered around the valley and north side of the lake. To reach the area, take Highway 5A out of town and follow the signs to Monck Park.

Leave your vehicle in the parking lot and walk down to second beach. To reach the pictographs, walk around the fence at the edge of Monck Park and look for a large, smooth, white boulder. Please remember, this is the private property of Nicola Lakeshore Estates. The owners would like everything you bring in carried back out.

About 900 feet from the pictographs, on the right side of the trail, are several grassed depressions in the ground, about 15 to 20 feet in diameter. These are where the pit houses once stood. Keep a sharp eye open. They are hard to spot.
