Whether thou art a troubadour, an artesan or a stately knight, thou art invited to don thine tunic and leggings and come thee to the Medieval Faire.

The official name for the fair is the Secret Squirrel event for the Adria Empire and goes April 27 starting at 9 a.m. at Spius Creek in Merritt.

“One of the things that’s different this year is that we’re not doing it in conjunction with any other event, it’s just the medieval faire,” said organizer Frances Depper George. “In other years we’ve run it around Easter alongside the Black Powder event but we didn’t do that this year. The beginning of April was way too cold.”

George said that a friend of hers is allowing the medieval faire to use their property which is right on Spius Creek. She explained that the Secret Squirrel event is named so because squirrels do a lot of good things in the wilderness.

“They warn each other of trouble and they have a really good work ethic,” she said. “When someone steals their nuts they just go and gather more. They distribute seeds and do all sorts of things. So we’re using a squirrel as an example of a good work ethic and being useful in the community.”

The event will feature swordfighting in full armour for budding Jaime Lannisters or Jack Sparrows. There will also be archery and demonstrations Saturday evening of period-appropriate firearms such as blusterbusses and pirate pistols.

“We’ll have people around in period-appropriate garb,” she said. “If people are interested, we’re hoping to organize some kind of monthly event here if people are interested. This is our once a year event. For other events, we have to go outside of the valley.”

George said they’ve run the medieval faire for several years here in Merritt. She enjoys the camaraderie among the participants and learning the survival skills used in medieval times.
