There’s nothing like slamming into a proverbial wall to deflate one’s enthusiasm.
My wall took the shape of a weight freeze. When I stepped on the scale at last Friday’s weekly weigh-in I felt sure I would hear more positive results. After all, I was strictly watching my portions and snacking on fruit rather than chocolate, and my exercise efforts were deserving of praise. However, as it turned out, my weight was exactly the same as it had been a week ago.
It was better than learning I had increased, but I had thought that I was on a roll.
I realize that in my first column I stated my reasons for joining the Biggest Loser did not necessarily involve weight loss. Rather my goal was to develop self-discipline and increase my fitness, which I suppose I am accomplishing. However, my extremely competitive side seems to have taken over, and the weight freeze was definitely a blow to my ego.
Luckily, others are having more success than me. This week’s “biggest loser” was Jude Norberg who managed to lose seven pounds in one week.
“I was quite surprised because I actually lost more this week than the first two weeks, and usually you lose more weight to begin with,” she said.
She attributes her success to the fact that she did “a whole lot more exercise” this week including two sessions of Aqua Zumba. Norbert has also been sticking to a special Glycemic Index diet, which she says seems to correspond with the program recommendations.
Sticking to a diet and exercise regime can be hard, but Norbert says she has lots of support. Her husband of 33 years has been encouraging her as well as her church congregation. Now she says the key is to stick with it.
Overall, she says the program has been an interesting experience so far.
“It’s given me a chance to try different things, otherwise I never would have tried the Aqua Zumba.”
For myself it’s been hard to fit the classes into my schedule because it seems there is always something else happening in Merritt. However I did make it to a ‘women and weights’ class last week that I thoroughly enjoyed. Like Norberg, I probably wouldn’t have tried it otherwise.
Halfway through the challenge now, I need to shake off my mental setback and get out there and exercise. I will admit that despite my static weight, I am definitely feeling healthier. That, and there’s the lure of competition that won’t allow me to give up.
