Gun-wielding locals gather for shoot
Shooters are scheduled to gather at the “Range” on Aberdeen Road Sunday in Lower Nicola to test their shotgun shooting skills.
“This is an annual event that we put on,” said Paul Komonoski, president of the Nicola Valley Fish and Game Club. “We’ve been shooting for, my god, I hate to think how far back.”
Participants will target clay birds that will be shot out of a machine. Those who showcase the most skill will be given meat prizes.
Komonoski said the event usually attracts many gun-wielding Nicola Valley residents, but he hesitated to estimate how many will show up on Sunday.
The powder usually flies more in the spring with the warmer weather. The gun cabinets are opened both on the weekend and during the week, when people go out to the “Range” for practice.
Shotgun shoot co-ordinator Brett Gilmore said usually teams of five people each come out every year.
“We had 11 come out last year and 13 the year before,” he said. “It’s a pretty involved and in-depth competition. It’s best to come out and see it for yourself.”
People can visit the “Range” on Saturday around 1 p.m. to practice shooting.
Fred Watts, owner of Nicola Valley Outdoors, said many of his customers set out to shoot on the weekend.
“Shotguns,” he said, when asked about why he participates in the target shooting. “I’m a shop owner in town and those are all my customers, so it’s good to show faith.”
The gun handlers are expected to gather at 9 a.m., with shooting beginning at 10 a.m.
