Province funds new playground equipment for Central Elementary

Merritt Central Elementary will receive $50,000 for playground equipment, the province announced on Thursday.

Central is one of 80 schools spanning all 60 school districts that is benefitting from the $3.3 million the government is putting towards the repair, improvement and replacement of playgrounds, said Education Minister George Abbott.

“Our government is committed to providing students and communities with safe and modern playground facilities to promote play-based learning, physical activity and healthy lifestyles,” he said.

This is the final phase of an $8 million playground funding commitment made by Premier Christy Clark and Abbott last September and it brings the total number of schools benefitting from the program to 227 provincewide.

During the first phase of the program, the province provided 23 school districts with $2 million for new equipment. Under the second phase, the province reimbursed 106 parent advisory councils with over $2.4 million for purchasing new playground equipment.

A government press release says the addition and renewal of playground equipment will promote active and healthy lifestyles by ensuring students have access to safe and modern facilities.
