Beer and wine store robbed

A man entered the Old Barley Market Cold Beer and Wine Store with a crowbar, demanding a bag be filled with cash, Merritt RCMP said.

The robber entered the store around closing at 10:57 p.m. Wednesday, before leaving the Quilchena Avenue store with the bag of cash.

Police didn’t have a final tally of the amount taken, but early estimates peg it at over $2,000.

“We’ve had some thefts of alcohol from there in the past,” Merritt RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore said, noting she doesn’t recall another robbery at the location.

The Merritt RCMP arrived moments after the theft and then the Kamloops Police Dog Services joined the investigation.

Police believe the dogs were able to track the suspect to the Double D Motel on Nicola Avenue, but lost the scent at that location.

The robbery was caught on camera and police describe the suspect as being between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing about 130 pounds.

He was wearing sunglasses and a grey hoodie under a ski jacket that had beige shoulders. Each sleeve had a red stripe down the side and the body was blue.

RCMP are still investigating and are requesting public assistance. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or the Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262.
