Merritt professional golfer Roger Sloan is competing this week in Lantana, Texas at one of 13 PGA stage one qualifying schools being held throughout the States.

After two rounds of competition at the Lantana Golf Club, Sloan is sitting in a tie for 11th place, out of a field of 78 golfers, with a three-under-par score of 141.

Sloan shot an opening round 71 on Tuesday, and followed that up with a two-under-par score of 70 on Wednesday. The final two rounds are scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

The top 23 qualifying positions and ties at each of the stage one competitions around the country will proceed on to stage two qualifying schools at six locations in the U.S. the week of Nov. 15-19.

Approximately 150 players from the stage two competitions will be eligible to take part in the final qualifying stage, slated for Indian Wells, California from Nov. 30 – Dec. 5.

Sloan and his fellow competitors are trying to earn coveted positions on next season’s PGA ChampionsTour or Nationwide Tour.

This past season, Sloan, 24, competed on the Canadian Pro-fessional Golf Tour.

In eight CPGT starts, Sloan had four Top-10 finishes, including a win at the Western Championship in Kam-loops in June, and a second at the Mexican Championship in May.

Sloan had total earnings of $49,788 this past season, fourth best on the CPGT circuit. He also competed for Canada, along with Adam Had-win, in a World Cup qualifier in Venezuela in September.
