RODEO ROUND-UP

Merritt’s three representatives at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette, Wyoming returned home late last week.

In the girls’ cow cutting event at the NHSRF, Madison Stoltzfus placed 54th and 71st out of 114 competitors in her two goes, earning 202 and 199 points respectively.

In the girls’ barrel racing competition, there were a total of 170 competitors. Amy Pozzobon placed 81st and 101st in her two runs, and had a best time of 18.331 seconds.

Fallon Fosbery placed 69th in her first ride, with a time of 18.275, but unfortunately took a five-second penalty in her second run, and wound up finishing 151st.

Both Pozzobon and Stoltzfus have two more years of eligibility for the NHSRF, while Fosbery has three years.

In BCRA action on the weekend, Fosbery (right) was the winner of the Jr. breakaway roping event at the 21st Interlakes Rodeo in Roe Lake, B.C. Her time of 4.0 seconds was good for a first place prize of $224.32.

United finish fourth

The Merritt United U-12 boys’ soccer team finished fourth in their division at the Summer Heat tournament in West Kelowna.

In their first and last games, United lost 8-2 and 5-0 against a very strong UCT Lightning side from Regina. In between, Merritt was defeated 9-2 by the Kelowna Rangers and lost 4-0 versus the Kamloops Blaze.

Goal scorers for Merritt on the weekend were Cody Hamilton, Patrick Peterson, Nathan Kinley and Sahil Bansi.

Despite the losses, head coach Brian Kinley was extremely pleased with the play of his young, inexperienced squad. Opposition teams praised the United players for their “heart” and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Centennials Booster Club AGM

The Merritt Cen-tennials Booster Club will be holding its Annual General Meeting this coming Monday, August 8 at 7 pm at the Ska-Lu-La Workshop at 1775 Coldwater Ave.

The evening will consist of reports on Booster Club finanaces for the 2010-11 fiscal year, and the election of the 2011-12 Board of Directors.

“We’d like to hear from you even if you only have a few spare hours a month to donate,” stated Booster Club president Betty Doberstein in a press release. “Any amount of volunteer time is a huge help.”

Three Merritt rugby players to represent B.C.

No fewer than three Merritt rugby players have made the B.C. Under-18 girls’ rugby team that will be competing at the National Rugby Festival in Calgary from August 17-21.

Brittany Brabant, Shayla George and Emma Graham were all named to this year’sprovincial team following a five-day identification camp in Vancouver last week.

“The camp was hard,” said Graham on Tuesday of this week. “We were doing rugby six hours a day.”

A total of 25 players, from the Lower Mainland, the Interior, the Cariboo and Vancouver Island, were selected to the B.C. team.

The three Merritt girls will return to Van-couver for additional training from August 12 – 16, before embarking for Calgary and the five-day National Festival event.

Brabant was a member of the B.C. U-18 girls’ team last year that went to California. George was on the Zone 2 team at the B.C. Summer Games in Langley. This is Gra-ham’s first selection to a provincial rugby team.
