Minor hockey season winding down

With all three Merritt rep teams now out of the playoff picture, the Merritt minor hockey season is very rapidly coming to a close.

The Ramada peewee reps and the Tracker Sportswear midget reps joined the Murray GM bantam reps on the sidelines following elimination action this past weekend. The peewees were swept by Kelowna 6-1 and 4-2 in their best-of-three series, while the midgets lost in similar fashion, 3-2 and 4-3 to South Okanagan.

In other playoff action, the Interior Savings house peewees lost 9-2 to Logan Lake in the final game of their best-of-three playoff series. Goal scorers for the Merritt side were Jesse Landerkin and Tyler Mosley.

The McDonalds junior girls’ team hosted an atom and peewee jamboree on the weekend. The almost 100 players in attendance from Merritt, Kamloops, Kelowna, Clearwater and Williams Lake were divided into six teams and two divisions. Team Blue emerged victorious in both the junior and senior categories, with Team Black second and Team Red third.

Beverley tackles the Alcan 5000 car rally

Local sports car rally enthusiast Nicki Beverley begins the ‘big one’ this Thursday.

Beverley, and fellow driver Max Vaysburd from Washington State, are competing in the 4,400 mile Alcan Rally which runs from Feb. 22 - March 2.

The ninth edition of the Alcan winter rally begins in Kirkland, WA and travels north through British Columbia, the Yukon and Northwest Territories before finishing up in Anchorage, Alaska.

This year’s course takes cars and drivers as far north as Tuktoyaktuk, NWT (above the Arctic Circle), and includes over 230 km of the legendary “ice roads” recently made popular on the History Channel’s tv show “Ice Truckers”.

The completion of this year’s Alcan 5000 is timed to coincide with the start of the famous Iditarod sled dog race from the same city.

Look for more on Beverley and her participation in the Alcan 5000 in next Tuesday’s edition of the Merritt Herald.

Sheldon part of BC Masters track record

Randy Sheldon, a P.E. teacher at Merritt Secondary School, joined up with three members of the Tri-City Greyhounds Track Club from Vancouver to set a new B.C. record in the Master’s  4 x 200m relay at an invitational meet in Kamloops on the weekend.

The fleet foursome, who came up just short of a new Canadian record as well, finished in 1:43.97.

Sheldon also picked up a pair of third place finishes in the individual 60m and 200m events.
