Some of the biggest stars in country music are set to roll into town on the August long weekend to play the Rockin’ River Music Festival, and the Merritt Chamber of Commerce wants to make sure the party is started by the time they get here.

To that end, the local business group is reviving one of the more popular promotions from years’ past — a street party set up on Quilchena Avenue.

“There’s gonna be a mixture of different vendors, organizations, some activities. A lot of it is local this year,” said Etelka Gillespie, manager for the chamber.

Quilchena Avenue will be closed from Garcia Street to Voght Street, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on both Aug. 4 and 5.

The street party replaces a similar event hosted by the Chamber at Spirit Square for the past two years during the Rockin’ River Festival. Gillespie explained that having more manpower this year allowed the Chamber to upgrade the scope of the street party.

“We’re gonna keep things alive during the day for locals and Rockin’ River go-ers,” said Gillespie.
