The Merritt News announced Thursday that the local paper will end publication this week.

Interim Publisher Tim Shoults said the decision to close was due to economic reasons.

“The paper is operating at a loss and has not performed financially as we expected for an extended period of time,” Shoults explained in the announcement published on the News‘ front page (July 26). “We do not project being able to return the operation to a profitable position, and have therefore made the difficult decision to cease operations.”

The Merritt News, a division of Glacier Media Group, will publish its final issue on Aug. 2 after 21 years of publication in the Nicola Valley.

Merritt Herald Associate Publisher Theresa Arnold said she would like to thank the News’ staff for their dedication to the community, and wished them success in future endeavors.

“The Merritt News has been in business for over 20 years and has proven to be a great competitor for the Herald throughout these years,” she said. “The Herald would like to let the public know that we will continue working towards producing an informational and community-based product for Merritt and the Nicola Valley every Tuesday and Thursday.”
