Artists from the Nicola Valley are invited by Conayt Friendship Society to design an art piece that pays tribute to Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls and LGBTQ2S individuals.

Conayt Friendship Society has put out a call for artists for a memorial project within the Nicola Valley.

“We are inviting artists from the Nicola Valley to submit their ideas for a memorial that will serve to honor the lives and legacies of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls and LGBTQ2S individuals, as well as increase awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and LBGTQ2S individuals,” said Women’s Wellness Coordinator, Brenda Thomson.

While a location for the memorial has not yet been determined, Thomson says that it will be ideally be in a public location, providing a space for people to gather and pay their respects.

The location of the memorial in Merritt will be determined once the piece is selected; ideally it will be installed at a place where families and community can gather to spend time for healing, praying and reflection,” said Thomson.

The design can be created by an individual artist or a team of artists, and all designs, mediums and sizes will be considered.

Thomson notes that there has already been significant interest in the project, which will be sponsored by Conayt Friendship Society.

The deadline for submissions is August 14, 2020 and review and selection of a design will take place on August 31, 2020. The project completion deadline will be November 3, 2020. Dedication and celebration will be sometime in January 2021.
