Story by: Kamloops This Week

As of 4 p.m.on Tuesday, Feb. 18, the Coquihalla Highway is closed in both directions due to an avalanche control at the summit, near the former toll booth.

With the highway receiving immense amounts of snow — another 30 centimetres on Tuesday on top of a metre of the white stuff last week — travel has been dicey at best, with transportation authorities advising against using the route.

Drivers are urged to take Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon, which adds about an hour on the trip from Kamloops to the Coast.

Even before the closure of the Coquihalla due to the avalanche, a travel advisory noted limited visibility with heavy snow falling between Merritt and Hope.

According to drivebc.ca, further avalanche-control work is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19, between 8 a.m. and noon.
