The Merritt Fire Rescue Department held an open house on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. to proudly show off its brand new #1 fire truck. Highlights of the new acquisition include a 1,750 gallon per minute pump, a carrying capacity of 800 gallons of water, and a custom-built backend that allows for the storage of more equipment. For example, the new truck has the capability of carrying 14 spare oxygen bottles as opposed to the traditional six. The new truck has an external ladder for accessing the top of the vehicle, and pull-out, tilt-down trays for ease of storing and retrieving tools. The roof of the truck has a water gun that can be operated by remote from as far away as 500 feet.
