Revving motors could be heard around town yesterday as Merritt’s first Great Canadian Bike Rally got underway.

The morning began with a parade of flags riding procession that departed from the Wagon West Travel Plaza and ended at the main stage area in the City Furniture parking lot. As bikers crossed the bridge on Voght St. near A&W, members of Merritt’s Royal Canadian Legion saluted veterans in the parade.

During opening ceremonies festival organizers invited local dignitaries to say a few words, including Chief Victor York, Mayor Susan Roline, MLA Harry Lali and MP Dan Albas.

After some hand drumming by the local First Nations, organizer Mike Fairfield welcomed motorcycle enthusiasts to town and declared the rally open.

“This is our community. We love it and we want you to come and experience it,” said Fairfield. “Most bikers have big hearts. We are here to spend money and raise money for the kids.”

During the rally bikers will participate in poker rides and local events and the event will feature many musicians at the main stage including Trooper on Friday and Colin James on Saturday.
