At its regular meeting last Tuesday (April 26) city council unanimously approved directing staff to prepare a smoke-free bylaw.

The bylaw could prohibit smoking in parks and other public spaces such as outside the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

A representative from the Interior Health Authority made a presentation to council back on March 22 requesting it enact such a bylaw in its city, and Coun. Linda Brown subsequently brought forward the request to have staff develop a smoke-free bylaw at the April 12 council meeting.

City of Merritt corporate officer Melisa Miles told the Herald there are many communities around B.C. with smoke free bylaws, and she is currently developing one for council consideration.
