DriveBC is advising that avalanche control will take place on the Coquihalla Hwy. beginning tonight.
A road closure is planned in both directions between Exit 183 Peers Creek Rd. and Exit 286 Merritt, a distance of 101.8km.
The route will be closed for six hours, from Jan. 5 at 10 p.m. to Jan. 6 at 4 a.m.
Alternate routes will be available via Hwy. 1 and Hwy. 3.
According to the province, “Avalanches occur naturally when the bonds that hold the winter snowpack together break from additional stresses created by weather factors such as rain, wind, rising temperatures and/or the weight of new or wind drifted snow.”
Avalanche technicians monitor eight key locations across BC, using information from a network of weather stations as well as snowpack investigations and avalanche observations.
Conditions as we have had recently in high mountain passes such as those on the Coquihalla, can lead to the triggering of serious avalanches, necessitating the closure of the highway for safety and avalanche control.
DriveBC will provide a further update Jan. 6 at 4 a.m.
