Student Annie Baek was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Mayor and Council at July 20th’s regular council meeting.

In March of this year, council voted unanimously to establish two scholarships, which would provide $1,000 each to two local grade 12 graduates who planned to continue their education at a post-secondary institution.

During this, the inaugural year of the annual scholarship, Annie Baek and Katie Klassen were selected as recipients. Baek was on hand to receive her scholarship as well as a letter from the City, while Katie Klassen will be accepting hers at the Aug. 27 council meeting.

Mayor Linda Brown initially suggested the awards after realizing that while a number of community organizations provided scholarships to exceptional Nicola Valley students, the City did not.

“Preference is given to students who have shown leadership in youth or civic activities, or have volunteered in the community,” Mayor Brown informed council, prior to calling Miss Baek up to receive her award.

“Annie is an outstanding student and community volunteer who graduated in June from MSS. She will be continuing her educational career at the University of Toronto in the fall in a mechanical engineering program. We’re very proud of Annie’s accomplishments and wish her all the best as she continues in her educational career.”

After posing for a photo with Mayor and council, Miss Baek thanked them for the award.

“We know you’ll do us proud,” said Mayor Brown.
