Merritt City council is donating $1,000 to the City of Fort McMurray to use at that its discretion for the benefit of residents in the aftermath of the wildfire that ravaged the city.

The Fort McMurray fire has destroyed an estimated 2,432 homes and other structures and 88,000 people were forced to evacuate.

As of Saturday, the fire spanned 241,000 hectares, but is growing slower than before. 

Evacuees stand to receive about $2,000 each in aid organized through the Red Cross and the Province of Alberta. 

There is no word yet on when residents will be allowed to return.
