Wildfires season has officially sparked in the Nicola Valley.

The Merritt Herald reported two wildfires were burning in the Nicola Valley on April 4.

While they have both been extinguished, two more have taken their place.

One of those new wildfires is located north-west of Merritt near Agate Creek, but BC Wildfires Service officials do not have an accurate estimate of its size.

“The reason for that is because it is quite difficult to access. It is at mid to high elevation and so crews are working to find a way to get into that fire,” said fire information officer Jodie Lucius. “In the meantime they are of course monitoring that fire from a distance.”

While crews are having a hard time getting to the site, Lucius said no structures are threatened at this time.

“We are working quite closely with the Shackan Indian Band to gain that access and for any future plans,” she added.

The second fire is burning near the south side of Nicola Lake close to Douglas Lake Road.

It is currently measured at 2.7 hectares and classified as “under control,” meaning the BC Wildfire Service does not expect it to grow further.
