Logan Lake, as I’ve said many times before, is a community which exhibits care and concern for and about others on an almost daily basis.

Take for example, last week’s Food Drive for the Logan Lake Food Bank. A team of 26 volunteers, including nine young adults, either drove around town picking up donations or remained on site to do the sorting.

While many residents don’t believe there are people in our town who are economically disadvantaged, those who volunteer at the Food Bank on a regular basis, paint a more accurate picture of need.

At the end of the event, Food Bank directors, Rob and Monica Oram and Miguel Godau, were vocal in their appreciation of both the volunteers who participated and, especially, the Logan Lake residents whose generous food donations made the event an overwhelming success. And, everyone associated with the Food Bank, wanted me, on their behalf, to offer a BIG thank you for the great community support.

In speaking to the volunteers doing the sorting, they wanted the community to know the kinds of items that are needed year round on regular basis and which can be dropped off at the Food Bank on Thursdays between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Items on the request list include: coffee, peanut butter, jam, toilet paper, Kleenex, toothpaste, canned ham, tuna and salmon, which can be used to make meals, canned tomatoes and tomato paste, fruit juice, boxes of cereal, noodles, pasta, and pasta sauce with meat and canned soup. Look in your cupboard to see what you use for meal preparation and you’ll learn those are the same things the Food Bank always needs. So, if the volunteers missed you or you didn’t know about the food drive, why not put together a couple of shopping bags of the items listed above and take them into the Food Bank. I know your generosity is and, will continue to be, appreciated.

You can’t tell by the weather but, really and truly, summer is just around the corner and with it comes the W.H.Y.’s gift to Logan Lake children and their families. This year the program for children 6 – 12 years will be called Discovery Camp and runs from 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., Monday to Thursday from July 4 to Aug. 18. The camp, overseen by the W.H.Y., will be hosted by two very special and responsible young adults – Jeremy Sorochan and Jessica Crockett.

The two J’s will be offering “cool” themes each week and will, no doubt, incorporate both physical and mental exercises as part of their programs. For more information about registration fees and to pre-register, please call the W.H.Y. at 250-523-6229 and don’t delay.

These words also come with the warning that if this summer the program isn’t supported by Logan Lake families, it won’t be repeated in the future and what a loss that will be for the community.
