Two people are dead after the pickup truck they were driving in collided head-on with a transport truck on the Trans-Canada Highway south of Ashcroft Tuesday evening.

At about 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, Ashcroft RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision in the southbound lane of the highway at the Ashcroft Ranch.

Both vehicles were engulfed in flames.

Efforts to remove the two occupants of the pickup truck were unsuccessful.

RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the crash. Roads were bare and dry at the time of the collision.

The truck is believed to have crossed in the path of the commercial vehicle. A witness to the incident said the pickup truck was having difficulty staying in the northbound lane.

The driver of the tractor trailer was transported to hospital in Kamloops with non-life-threatening injuries.

The RCMP reminds drivers to be mindful of increased traffic volumes with holiday travellers and that road conditions can change very quickly.

RCMP recommend slowing down, driving to the conditions of the road, and leaving cellphones alone while driving.
