People are getting crafty at the Civic Centre as part of the monthly Valley Scrapbooking meets.

The recreational group, which began in October 2011, holds monthly meetings for crafters, scrapbookers and paper project enthusiasts from September to June. It’s an open organization operated by four Merritt women, and charges a $25 flat fee for a weekend full of come-and-go crafting.

“If you’re involved within the scrapbooking world, a crop like this down in Vancouver or even up in Kamloops or Kelowna is anywhere from $175 to $250,” Danica Vere, one of the organizers, said. “People are thinking it’s $25 a day. They’re not used to a full weekend event, but we’re as simple as it comes.”

That $25 fee includes an eight-foot table for supplies and crafting, $10 of scrapbooking products, and snacks and refreshments for the weekend.

The group is able to offer the weekend for an inexpensive rate because it’s registered as a recreational group with the City of Merritt, which also grants them access to the Civic Centre.

Vere said besides the low cost, the social aspect of the club is one of its biggest strengths.

“The camaraderie’s amazing. People will come in and go, ‘I didn’t know you did this.’ Friends are learning that their friends have the exact same interests,” she said.

Valley Scrapbooking also welcomes families and allows members to drop in as they please.

“With our hours, especially on the weekend, families feel guilty that that’s their weekend time,” Vere said. “So they’ll come for a little bit in the morning or a little bit in the afternoon, go home, have dinner, put the kids to bed, and come back and scrapbook with their friends until one o’clock in the morning.”

The group is open to people of all skill levels, and Vere said they see people from all across the spectrum of scrapbooking experience.

“We’ve got first-time scrapbookers who’ve just had a baby and they’re not quite sure where to start, but they’ve got all these scrapbooking supplies,” she said. “We have people who have been published nationally and internationally. We have people who have been in the Merritt area for many a year and have established businesses that are within the scrapbooking industry.”

The group also hosts area scrapbook suppliers, and in the November crop hosted vendors from Williams Lake, B.C., and Princeton. Vendors offer supplies that members may want to purchase. Vere said people bring their own supplies and the group provides a safe place to leave them all weekend, with a member there until the end of the night to lock up the room.

The next crop runs from Dec. 14 to 16, from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Vere said Valley Scrapbooking is planning to provide two hot meals and hold a pot luck as well on that weekend.
