A 68-year-old Langley man is dead after he fell out of a fishing boat on Island Lake, a remote lake about an hour’s drive from Logan Lake.

“The man was in his boat alone, when he ended up in the lake,” said Logan Lake RCMP Cpl. Kathleen Thain of the accident, which occurred on Saturday, July 7.

According to the RCMP, a witness saw the man in distress, but was unable to reach him in time to assist.

“It is believed the man died by drowning,” said Thain. “There was a life jacket in the boat at the time of the accident.”

Island Lake is accessed by Forest Service roads and is located near a recreation site. The area is about 64 kilometres from Merritt and is tucked behind the Highway Valley Copper Mine.

The man, whose identity has been withheld until his family is notified, was visiting from Langley.
