As new positive cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in the Interior, so does Merritt’s.

For the week of Aug. 8-14, the City of Merritt saw 17 new cases of the virus, by far the highest number in months.

Merritt saw just six new cases last week. Previous to that, it had been five weeks since there was even one new positive test.

That number puts Merritt in the second highest bracket of average daily rate per 100,000 population at 15.1-20.0, according to the BC CDC’s parameters.

In surrounding regions, the Central Okanagan remains plagued with new cases, coming in at the highest bracket per 100,000 population with 922 new cases. Vernon is also within the highest bracket with 109 new cases, as is Hope with 17.

Kamloops had 121 new cases, a rise of 62 from the previous reporting period. Princeton remained low at three new cases, while South Cariboo had six.

Outside of the Island Health District and the Northern Health District, only Agassiz and Lillooet reported zero new cases.
