Team Canada is once again representing the country for softball at the Pan-American Championships. The team aims to compete for gold and glory, after a long two-year layoff and leading the charge, none other than Merrittonian, John Stuart.

Under the direction of Stuart in 2019, the squad was able to win Bronze at the Pan-American games in Prague, Czech Republic. Their play earned them a spot in Argentina for the 2022 Pan-American Championships.

“Our pitching has been phenomenal and our hitting has been getting better every game,” Stuart explained.

Ten teams are currently competing and Team Canada has been undefeated in their first six games. The team was able to finish in the top four and now are qualified for the World Championships happening in New Zealand, November of this year.

“The World Championships were every two years but because of COVID our team has not been together since Prague,” Stuart Explained.

“I’d say we’re about 80 percent from where we were before COVID. Hopefully we get into the gold medal game and then anything can happen.”

Team Canada’s next game will be against Cuba and is set to be played on Friday, April 29. If they win, they will advance to the gold medal game. To get the latest news on Team Canada please visit their website www.softball.ca
