Since the floods, the Merritt RCMP have seen a rise in break and enter reports to vacant homes in the Phase 4 area of Merritt. Some of these break ins may have been prevented if crime prevention methods had been utilized.

“We recognize the frustration of home owners in the phase 4 area that have experienced break ins to their properties”, said Sgt. Josh Roda.

“We want to encourage home owners to use crime prevention methods to deter thieves from targeting their vacant homes. Please be assured we are out patrolling daily, but cannot be everywhere at once.”

What you can do to deter thieves

1) Lock all doors and windows, including those on sheds. Close gates on walkways;

2) Leave interior lights on so your residence appears occupied. Place lights on timers;

3) Leave exterior lights on and use exterior motion lights;

4) Keeps shrubs and bushes trimmed to deter thieves from being hidden if on your property;

5) Secure valuable items and items that would otherwise be left outside, such as BBQs, lawnmowers, tools, etc.

6) Consider installing a security system and cameras that can be monitored by a company or app on your phone.
