Merritt minor hockey activities were very quiet over the holiday break.
One team that was in action was the Tim Horton’s Timbits novices. They were at a tournament in Salmon Arm. For the third year in a row, they emerged victorious at the eight-team event.
The local novices opened with a convincing 16-1 victory over North Okanagan. That was followed by the team’s only loss of the tournament, a 6-4 setback to the Kamloops Flyers.
Merritt closed out round robin play with a 10-1 win over the Salmon Arm Bull Dogs, then defeated the Salmon Arm Wolverines 7-2 in one semi-final.
The championship game was a thrilling rematch between Merritt and Kamloops. The youngsters from the Nicola Valley were not about to be beaten twice, as they prevailed over the Winged Ones 4-2.
Talon Zakall tallied fifteen goals in total for the victorious Merritt novices while Ethan Thygesen had eight. Other Timbits scorers were Garrett MacDonald (5), Darcy Fraser (3), Carson Lang and Spencer Vaughan (2) and Allison Moore, Chase Cooke and Atayu Johnny (1 each).
Tristan Bjarnason and Nicholas Willey played equally in net to help their novice team earn the title in Salmon Arm.
