It was a scene of destruction at the site of a fire that occurred in a residential neighbourhood on Monday.

“In the early morning of Oct. 26 the fire department and the RCMP responded to a report of a structure fire at 1676 Coldwater Ave.,” said Staff Sgt. Maj. Drouin of the Merritt RCMP.

“Ultimately it was determined that the fire originated from a shed that was fully engulfed and demolished in the fire. The fire then spread to the nearby fence and also destroyed a camper, the type that you put in the back of a pick-up truck.”

Although the spread of the flames was not extreme, Drouin notes that a nearby home was cosmetically damaged by the blaze.

“It then caused some damage to a neighbouring home, that consisted of the siding burning off. Nothing that would cause the structure to be unsafe for occupancy,” said Drouin.

The RCMP and MFRD conducted a preliminary investigation. The investigation indicated the cause of the fire was likely not suspicious.

“Along with the fire department our members responded and determined that there was no criminality involved with the fire,” said Drouin.

“It’s believed to be an accidental fire related to electrical appliances in the shed.”
