The Merritt RCMP have confirmed that no charges will be laid after two suspects were identified and detained following an alleged child luring incident at 7/11 on Nicola Avenue.

A press release by the RCMP originally stated that on October 25, 2022, shortly after 6:00pm, a white panel van with a ladder fixed to the roof pulled into the parking lot of 7/11 on Nicola Avenue in Merritt. According to reports, two male occupants inside the work vehicle attempted to lure two young girls to the van. The girls refused and left the scene safely. The van and suspects were identified on October 26, 2022, according to Sgt. Josh Roda.

Roda added that while the suspects were detained, they claimed they did not have a nefarious purpose, and were let go shortly afterwards. Roda said that while unfortunate, there is not enough evidence to lay charges in the investigation. He also added that the RCMP is urging parents to speak with their children about practicing safety when out in the community and interacting with strangers.
