The flow of traffic increases in the summertime – the roads have cleared up, the kids are out of school and it’s time for that much needed vacation.

With thoughts of holidays racing through our heads, the RCMP are warning that they are cracking down on bad summer driving behaviours, so don’t speed away too quickly because you may be fined for it.

They are targeting impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and unsafe and dangerous driving habits.

“Anyone who is excessive speeding, they’re being towed and impounded,” said Cst. Tracy Dunsmore of the Merritt RCMP.

“You’re looking at several hundreds of dollars [for the ticket] plus the tow bill plus the impound bill,” she said.

With Mountainfest the Great Canadian Bike Rally, and the 100th Anniversary Homecoming week, Merritt will host many visitors in the next couple weeks. They are only some of the events that have drivers excitedly hurrying and buzzing around.

“This time of year, they do tend to drive a little faster,” Dunsmore said.

With the Coquihalla clear of snow, the speeds creep higher, but Dunsmore said people will often call in erratic drivers.

“We get a lot of complaints,” she said.

Dunsmore advised for drivers to slow down and take their time.

“Everyone says ‘I drive fine’, but there’s always the other guy.”
