Officers at the Merritt RCMP detachment have been busy with traffic infractions, vehicle incidents and one case of a male suspect firing upon a local resident.

Merritt RCMP File #2021-4898

On September 17, 2021, The Merritt RCMP responded to a complaint of shots fired at a local resident while operating his excavator on a rural property near Merritt. Officers quickly mobilized in the area and located the male suspect driving away from the scene and still in possession of a rifle. Officers safely arrested the male suspect without incident. The case is before the Crown for a charge assessment with Merritt officers recommending various weapons charges against the accused.

Merritt Driver convicted of Impaired Driving stemming from a collision on Highway 8.

On April 23, 2021, the Merritt RCMP responded to the scene of a collision involving a single vehicle crash into a telephone pole on Highway 8 in Lower Nicola. Despite failing to remain at the scene, our officers quickly identified and located the driver at a local residence. On September 14, 2021, Sheila Bodnar was convicted of Operating with over 80 milligrams of alcohol and received a $2,000 fine and a 1-year Driving Prohibition.

Prohibited Salmon Arm Driver caught in Merritt

On March 1, 2021, in its efforts to tackle road safety, the Merritt RCMP conducted a check stop at the intersection of Nicola Avenue and Juniper Drive in Merritt. Officers stopped a Salmon Arm motorist who was operating a vehicle contrary to a driving prohibition. On September 14, 2021, Vern Clemah was convicted under the BC Motor Vehicle Act for Driving While Prohibited and received a $500 fine, $75 Victim Surcharge and a 14 day jail sentence.
