The Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is hosting an open house to inform residents about a planned improvement project that will involve Smith Pioneer Park in Lower Nicola, the site of the ever-popular Lower Nicola Garlic Festival.

Phase 1 of the improvement project at Smith Pioneer Park will be taking place in 2022. The work during Phase 1 will include significant upgrades to existing infrastructure in the park, improvements to public safety, additions including a bandshell and a picnic shelter, and various landscaping and tree planting. Phase 1 of the project is being funded through the federal Canada Community Building Fund (CCBF). During the Board of Directors Regular Meeting on February 24, 2022, the Board approved allocating up to $336,500 from the CCBF to fund Phase 1 of improvements.

Currently, Phase 2 of the project is expected to take place in 2023, which will include a new pickleball court and basketball court, park benches, outdoor fitness stations, a perimeter path, and various landscaping and other additions.

The open house will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2022 from 3 pm to 5 pm at the Lower Nicola Community Hall, located at 2383 Aberdeen Rd. Residents are welcome to attend the open house and ask questions to TNRD staff and view renderings of the project.
