The City of Merritt is hoping to brighten the uncertain times of the COVID-19 pandemic with a weekly photo contest.

Each week community members are invited to take photos that work with that week’s particular theme. This week the theme is “Physical Distancing Activities”.

Merrittonians are encouraged to submit a photo showing themselves or their family engaging in activities that are still safe, and follow the mandate of remaining at least six feet apart. These activities can include hobbies, ways of passing the time, games, exercise, or anything else that keeps people happy and engaged.

The deadline to enter each week will be Sunday at 11:59 P.M. Submit a photo and a few lines describing what is happening in the photo. Multiple entries are encouraged.

The winner of each week’s contest will be selected by City Council, and the photographer will receive a shout out from Mayor Linda Brown in her weekly video updates.

“It is essential that the citizens of Merritt maintain a positive community spirit throughout this difficult time,” said Mayor Brown.

“Since we are practicing these guidelines and remaining isolated, we need things to keep up that community spirit. ‘We stand strong because we stand together’: a quote from Steven Bauwens. I believe this is one way to do that.”

The Mayor went on to say that she hopes the city will be able to come together once again before the year is out.

“In the fall, if all goes well, the city will be holding a celebration to honour the community for standing strong. Thank you all for participating.”

The city will also reserve the right to potentially use your photo in future marketing and promotional campaigns.
