Two new wildfires were sparked in the area on August 6 between Merritt and Spences Bridge, prompting BC Wildfire Crews to quickly engage in suppression efforts. One fire was put out soon after being spotted, but the Skuhost Creek wildfire continues to burn and is deemed ‘out of control’.

“There is one new fire, one of them was put out,” said Madison Smith from the BC Wildfire Service.

“It was just a spot fire and it was put out yesterday. The Skuhost Creek fire is still burning. It’s currently 2.1 hectares in size and out of control at this time. There are 20 personnel on site and no structures are threatened. There were airtankers actioning the fire yesterday, that were filling up in Kamloops.”

The Skuhost Creek fire is approximately 15kms from Spences Bridge, near Highway 8. No cause of these two fires has yet been determined.

The Dry Lake wildfire approximately 24kms north of Princeton, which is suspected to have been started by lightning at the beginning of this month, continues to burn but is now fully guarded and listed as ‘under control’, although an evacuation alert for properties in the area remains in place.

“The crews will begin tackling all the hot spots that are left and patrolling the fire,” said Smith of the Dry Lake fire.
